The Crimp Fold is a must-know technique for adding a “3D” effect to your models. The Crimp Fold has two variations, the Outside Crimp Fold and the Inside Crimp Fold. The difference between the two is simply the inversion of Mountain/Valley folds.
- Start with a rectangular sheet of paper.
- Rotate it so that the short sides are horizontal and the longer sides are vertical.
- Fold the paper in half.
- Make an arbitrary valley fold angled towards the left, around the halfway point, from bottom to top.
- Now make an arbitrary mountain fold on the upper flap, angled towards the right, from top to bottom.
- Flatten the paper.
- Unfold everything and rotate the page until the creases look like two “V’s”.
- This is the part where you choose if you want an inside or outside crimp fold.
For an Inside Crimp fold, you do the opposite, make both of the bottom V’s mountain folds and both of the top V’s and spine into valley folds.
For an Outside Crimp Fold, make both of the bottom V’s into valley folds and the top V’s plus the spine into mountain folds. - Grab both sides of the lower ends of the paper and push them together while folding them in half towards you.

The Outside crimp fold
So that’s how you perform both the Inside and Outside Reverse Fold. The next fold to master on your Origami journey is the Swivel Fold. If you haven’t learned the previous fold, the Squash Fold, make sure to check it out.
